Beijing to Datong by high-speed train: what to expect
Datong sits about two hours from Beijing by high-speed train — close enough
that a weekend trip is realistic, far enough that the city still feels like somewhere else entirely.
Here is what the journey actually involves.
The stations
High-speed services from Beijing depart from Qinghe و
Beijing North stations and arrive at Datong South (Datongnan), the
city’s purpose-built high-speed station. Make sure your ticket says Datong South — there are two
main stations serving the city, and they are not interchangeable.
From Datong South into the old city is roughly 20–30 minutes by taxi or
ride-hailing. Your hotel can also arrange a pick-up, which is worth doing if you are arriving late
or carrying heavy luggage.
How long it takes
The fastest high-speed services cover the route in a little under two hours. Slower trains and
services with more intermediate stops take longer, so check the specific departure when you book
rather than assuming the fastest time.
Booking
Tickets are sold through 12306, the national railway booking site and app, and
at station ticket counters. A few practical notes for international travellers:
- Passports work as ID for both booking and boarding — bring the physical passport you booked
with. - Book ahead during Chinese public holidays and the summer peak; seats on the fastest morning
departures go first. - Fares vary by service and class. Rather than quoting a number that will drift, check the current
price for your date on 12306 — it is displayed in yuan at booking. - Stations require a security check and a gate closes a few minutes before departure; arriving
30 minutes early is comfortable.
Is it worth it as a day trip?
Yes — with one caveat. Two hours each way plus a full day of sightseeing makes for a long day,
so most people either take an early train and accept the pace, or stay one night and see the old
city lit up after dark. If you can spare the night, take it: the rebuilt city walls and the Huayan
Temple square are at their best in the evening, and you will have the grottoes to yourself in the
early morning.
